Latest Two Aave stablecoin backstops shrank $12.4 million as reward rates rose in Cryptocurrency

Aave’s two tracked Ethereum V3 stablecoin backstops shrank by $12.4 million between Sept. 17 and Oct. 17 even as their extra reward rates increased. Together, the USDC and USDT positions held $116.09 million at the later observation, down 9.67% from $128.52 million. Cryptocurrency news Aave’s two tracked Ethereum V3 stablecoin backstops shrank by $12.4 million between Sept. 17 and Oct. 17 even as their extra reward rates increased. Together, the USDC and USDT positions held $116.09 million at the later observation, down 9.67% from $128.52 million. The positions belong to Umbrella, Aave’s system for using staked assets to absorb lending deficits. Participants keep earning underlying lending yield and receive additional rewards for accepting the possibility that their stakes will be used to cover losses.

The figures measure dollar-valued stakes. Their movement includes asset valuation as well as changes in the amount deposited, so a decline in the balance alone cannot identify withdrawals or losses. Multiplying each position’s tracked dollar value by its displayed extra reward rate implies approximately $1.994 million annualized at both endpoints.

A richer percentage rate coincided with less tracked protection capital, while that indicative aggregate reward amount barely moved. DefiLlama’s USDC history records a decline from $58,739,617 to $53,437,993.

Its USDT history shows a fall from $69,783,937 to $62,655,694. Those are reductions of $5.30 million and $7.13 million, respectively, adding to $12,429,867. Both comparisons use the Sept. 17 observation at 23:01 UTC and the Oct. 17 observation at 15:01 UTC, in 2026. The timestamps are slightly less than 30 days apart.

The percentages below are the additional reward component displayed for those observations. Ethereum V3 Umbrella stake Capital, Sept. 17 Capital, Oct. 17 Extra reward rate, Sept. 17 Extra reward rate, Oct.

17 USDC $58,739,617 $53,437,993 1.66% 1.82% USDT $69,783,937 $62,655,694 1.46% 1.63% The tracked positions are wrapped-aToken Umbrella stakes on Ethereum V3. DefiLlama identifies them as stkwaEthUSDC.v1 and stkwaEthUSDT.v1; their token identities match the current Aave address book. The USDC extra rate increased by 0.16 percentage points and the USDT rate by 0.17 points. Lending yield moved separately: USDC’s base rate rose from about 3.60% to 3.77%, while USDT’s increased from about 3.02% to 3.12%. The base component reflects the lending return. The extra component compensates for staking and slashing risk; only that component belongs in this safety-incentive calculation.

How the reward rate can rise For each observation, the calculation is the tracked dollar value multiplied by the displayed extra reward percentage, divided by 100, then summed across the two stakes. Using the September values gives $1,993,923.12 annualized. Using the October values gives $1,993,859.28. Both round to $1.994 million. These amounts are indicative annualized run rates derived from snapshots.

Actual accrual and payments depend on the path of rates, stake values, reward configuration and participation over time. Umbrella’s reward-controller documentation explains a mechanism through which the percentage rate can rise without a larger aggregate distribution. Its emission curve relates the amount of rewards distributed to the amount staked relative to a configured target. Aggregate emissions reach their maximum at the target. Between the target and 120% of target, emissions decline toward 80% of that maximum.

At or above the 120% boundary, aggregate emissions are flat. In that region, fewer stakes can share the same reward stream, increasing the rate per unit of capital.  » …
